Eating more unrefined, plant-based foods is an important strategy in prevention of chronic disease, management of chronic conditions, and promotion of overall health.

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) is the medical professional association providing education and, with the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine, facilitating board certification for physicians and select allied health professionals interested in treating the root cause of lifestyle-related chronic disease. Its membership comprises physicians, as well as members of the team necessary to engage and support patients in treating the cause of their chronic conditions: physician assistants, nurses, registered dietitians, health coaches and even health system executives. The organization defines Lifestyle Medicine as the use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic approaches, such as a predominantly whole food, plant-based diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, meaning and connectedness, avoidance of risky substance use, and other non-drug modalities, to prevent, treat, and, oftentimes, reverse the lifestyle-related, chronic disease that's all too prevalent. For the treatment, reversal and prevention of lifestyle-related chronic disease, ACLM recommends an eating plan that is based predominantly on a variety of minimally processed vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. Positions of Peer Medical Professional Associations While other medical professional associations, government bodies, and stakeholder groups have their own emphasis and focus when it comes to lifestyle and dietary guidance, a common theme does emerge: Eating more unrefined, plant-based foods is an important strategy in prevention of chronic disease, management of chronic conditions, and promotion of overall health.
